(Updated November 15, 2012)
Labor Day through New Year’s Day. It’s the time of year when most of the best movies of the year are released. And it’s the movie season that I anticipate more than any other. While there are always some big films in the Summer, my current taste in movies leans away from the tentpole blockbuster action films that I loved as a teenage boy and favors more character-driven dramas and dramadies. You know…the “serious” films that we cinephiles love so much. Of course there are always a few movies completely off my radar that end up being some of the best of the year, so while I anticipate these 10 films the most, I also anticipate the ones I can’t name right now that I’ll be loving in January and February.
10. On The Road
9. Liberal Arts
8. Nobody Walks
2 Clips from the film (no trailer available yet):
This year’s 10 movies are a mix of interesting choices from historical period pieces, to thrillers, to romantic dramadies, to action movies. A mixed bag that should make for some exciting hours in front of the big screen…unless they fail to live up to my high expectations.
Other movies that were considered for this list and are highly anticipated, but didn’t quite make the cut, include:
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Trouble With the Curve
Not Fade Away
3,2,1…Frankie Go Boom
The Loneliest Planet
Life of Pi
This is 40
Simon and the Oaks
2 movies that would have made this list for sure, but don’t have confirmed release dates for 2012 are: 1) writer/director Terrence Malick’s To The Wonder, which would be #1 on this list if I knew it was coming out for sure this year, and 2) At Any Price starring Zac Efron and Dennis Quaid. If either get confirmed release dates for this year, then you’ll see me revise this list to include them.
