Top 10 Movies of 1993

(Updated on February 11, 2012)

1993 was a perfect year for movies. All 10 of these movies are perfect in my eyes. I can re-watch them over and over, other than maybe Schindler’s List, which I tend to watch less often than the others. But that’s mostly because it’s a long film and I have to be in the right mood for it. I think the common thread with these 10 movies is just great writing and great acting. I highly recommend watching, or re-watching, each and every one of these films. This is one of those years when Hollywood really got it right and came out with 10 incredible films.

10.  Mrs. Doubtfire  (5 stars)

9.  The Pelican Brief  (5 stars)

8.  Alive  (5 stars)

7.  Schindler’s List  (5 stars)

6.  Rudy  (5 stars)

5.  The Fugitive  (5 stars)

4.  The Firm  (5 stars)

3.  Indecent Proposal  (5 stars)

2.  Groundhog Day  (5 stars)

1.  Jurassic Park  (5 stars)

Jurassic Park was definitely an “event movie” or “summer blockbuster” that blew us all away. I remember watching this film in a movie theater downtown in Madison, Wisconsin opening week in the Summer of 1993 and just being blown away by the CGI dinosaurs. Nothing like this had ever been done before! Jurassic Park was a classic Spielberg action/adventure film like Jaws (1975), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), and E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982). The story by Michael Crichton, based on his bestselling book, was movie manna from the heavens. And with James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) paving the way for advanced realistic CGI to be used in movies, Jurassic Park fundamentally changed summer movies forever. Every year since 1993, we get another Jurassic Park type CGI summer event movie…most of which fall short of the glory of Jurassic Park. Jurassic Park still holds up pretty well 18 years later, especially in its storytelling and acting. While the CGI dinosaurs look more dated than dinosaurs of today, they still do the job quite well of letting you escape into the Jurassic Park world where dinosaurs rule the earth again.
